Minecraft 1.21.6 Update - What's New

The Chase the Skies drop. A Dried Ghast block hydrated in water grows into a Ghastling and then into the Happy Ghast, a flying mount that carries up to four players in a harness. Multiplayer gets the Locator Bar, which points at other players.

Overview

Minecraft 1.21.6 is a stable release for Minecraft: Java Edition, published on June 17, 2025. It is the Chase the Skies game drop. Since 2024 Mojang ships its new content in several smaller drops a year instead of one big update, and each drop keeps the 1.21 number while adding a new theme of its own. This one records 14 changes in 4 categories.

The work in this update spans mobs, blocks & items, multiplayer, and changes. On the mobs side it brings the Happy Ghast, a flying mount that up to four players can ride once it wears a harness and the Ghastling, the young form that grows into a Happy Ghast in about twenty minutes, faster when you feed it snowballs.

Chase the Skies came out in June 2025 and shares the 1.21 world format with the rest of that line, so a world moves up to it without conversion. What makes it its own release is the content listed above, not a new version family.

Server Admin Migration Guide

  • Back up the world before the first start on 1.21.6, as with every drop
  • Plugins that touch leashes, saddles or loot tables need a build made for 1.21.6
  • The Locator Bar is on by default; turn it off with the locatorBar game rule on survival servers where players should stay hidden
  • Servers can now show dialogs to players, which replaces the older server links button

Known Issues

  • Some Qualcomm, AMD and Intel graphics had rendering problems that 1.21.7 and 1.21.8 fixed

What This Means

For players

If you play singleplayer or on a server, 1.21.6 is safe to update to. New blocks and items become craftable, new mobs begin to spawn in eligible worlds, and existing worlds carry forward without resetting. Back up your save first as a habit, then load it on the new version.

For server admins

Server owners should not rush a production upgrade. Wait for your platform (Paper, Spigot, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge) and every plugin or mod to publish 1.21.6-compatible builds, then test the full stack on a staging copy before touching the live world.

Background & Context

  • 1.21.6 is the Chase the Skies game drop: new content inside the 1.21 line, with the same world format as the releases around it.
  • Minecraft: Java Edition keeps full backward compatibility for worlds, so saves created on 1.21.6 continue to open and upgrade on later releases.
  • Always keep a backup of important worlds before changing versions; the Astroworld versions database tracks client and server compatibility for 1.21.6.
